Definition of carbon neutrality
Carbon neutrality refers to efforts to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions to zero worldwide in order to mitigate global warming. In October 2020, the Japanese government declared its intention to achieve carbon neutrality by reducing Japan’s net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. This initiative targets greenhouse gases including CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane), N2O (nitrous oxide) and fluorocarbon gases. Net or total zero means to reduce the sum of emissions, minus absorption and removal, to zero.
Initiatives Toward Carbon Neutrality
In April 2023, the Group established the Carbon Neutrality Promotion Office to drive the promotion of carbon neutrality as a social responsibility. We encourage all employees to be concerned about the global environment, to formulate group strategies to achieve carbon neutrality through technological innovation, to reduce the environmental impact of production, to introduce more environmentally friendly production processes, and to implement ways to reduce CO2 emissions. Furthermore, as a member of the Nippon Steel Group, we will lead integrated CO2 emission reduction activities in collaboration with Nippon Steel.
Our Group's CO2 emission reduction target
We have declared a target of reducing total CO2 emissions to 30% below 2013 levels by 2030, while aiming to become fully carbon neutral by 2050. The entire Group will work together to achieve these goals.
